Myths and More...

Before we begin we first want to debunk a few of the circulating sphynx bathing myths. If you have looked into owning a sphynx one of the first things you will typically see is that you need to bathe them once a week. Let me be the first to tell you that this is not true, in fact bathing your sphynx once a week can actually increase the amount of oils that they produce which makes them dirter. Second, not all sphynx cats love water... We known that there are tons of videos out there of sphynx cats happily hopping into the bathtub to injoy their spa day, while this is the case for some sphynx cats there are others who (just like any normal cat) do not appreciate having their toes in the water. While we do our very best to get our sphynx kittens well acclimated to water and used to bath time, there are some kittens who just arent a huge fan, and thats okay! There are other ways to clean your sphynx without totally emurging them in a bath. And lastly, it is said that darker colored sphynx do not get as dirty as lighter color sphynx. This is absolutely not true, they can get equally as dirty but the darker colors just hide it a little better!

-Bath Time-

Now that we have gone over some of the myths of bath time, lets discuss some of the most important bathing tips and tricks so bath time is enjoyable for both you and your sphynx. When bringing home your new sphynx they should have already recieved a few baths from their breeder or previous owner, it is important for you to ask how they react to bath time so you can be prepared and aware of how you should proceed with bathing your sphynx. It is also important to ask what type of soap they use and to try your best to stick with the same brand to avoid any unwanted skin irritations. Once you have all of that information we can move on to bath time!

If you aren't sure of what soap has been used on your sphynx before it is important to go with a natural non scented soap. That is the easiest way to try to avoid unwanted issues (below you can find brands that we recommend and avoid).

When bathing your sphynx it is important to make them feel comfortable and relaxed. The most common way we bath our sphynx is by first placing a small towel (like a hand towel) in the bottom of the bathtub or sink. Then fill the sink up with warm water, making sure that it is not too hot or too cold and filling it a few inches. You do not want to make it so full to the point your kitty only has its head above water. After you have your water ready gather your bath time supplies (wash glove/wash cloth, soap, towel, ect). Then it is time to grab your kitty and place them toes first into the water slowly. Once your kitty is in the water put your nonscented soap on your wash gloves or wash cloth and slowly wash their whole body. We have found that wash gloves are easier then a wash cloth because you dont have to hold onto anything, instead just wear them and scrub-a-dub. After your sphynx is all suds up you can rinse them off and then dry! When drying be sure to get every crack and wrinkly skin crevious possible to aviod bacterial issues. It is recommened by some people to get the tiniest bit of organic coconut oil on your hands afterwords and lather them with it to avoid dry skin. If one of our sphynx is known for having dryer skin then we will do this but it is not necessary for every sphynx.

If your sphynx is not a huge fan of water there are other ways you can bathe them! We recommend getting a wash cloth wet and wiping them down or there are all natural kitty wipes that can also be used during bath time! Sometimes this is the best option for those kitties who are a little more spicy for their baths.

We hope this little blog was helpful! If you ever have any questions about bath time for your kitties or what products we use we are more than happy to help and answer any questions. Below you can find some links to the products that we have used.
