They twitch when your cat is dreaming, flatten when they are annoyed, and point when they are hunting . Cat whiskers are far more than just adorable... They are highly sophisticated sensory tools that allow Ragdolls to navigate, hunt, and communicate in ways we can only imagine. In this blog post we are going to learn all about Ragdoll Cat Whiskers and why they are such an important tool for your cat.

What are Ragdoll Whiskers?
Whiskers, also known as vibrissae (the latin word for vibrate), are more than just long facial hair. Unlike the hair on the rest of the body, whiskers are highly sensitive touch receptors that are rooted deeply with nerves and vessels. Some people refer to them as "tactile hairs" because whiskers act as a built in radar that help cats to sense their surroundings, navigate in the dark, hunt and maintain their balance.
Made up of keratin (the same protein as nails) they are thicker and much more coarse than regular hair. Each whisker contains numerous nerve endings that connect to the Ragdolls brain making whiskers comparable to feeling like human finger tips. Another fun fact, small muscles surround the whisker follicles which allow cats to move their whiskers independently, how neat?!

Beyond the Muzzle...
While the long curly whiskers on your Ragdolls muzzle tend to get all the attention. Whiskers can actually be found in a variety of locations on your cat! Some of those being above the eyes, this location helps to trigger the blinking reflex, keeping their eyes safe from cobwebs and dust when they venture behind the couch. Another common location is on the chin, this can help your ragdoll eat their food in the dark. Lastly, while it is more rare, whiskers can be found on the back of the front and back legs.
Whisker position...
Did you know that the position of your Ragdoll cats whiskers can determine their mood? Whisker position can play a huge role in reading your Ragdoll cats body launguage. Lets go over the different positions and what they mean. If your cats whiskers are relaxed and slightly moved forward then that means your cat is calm and content. You can normally find their whiskers in this position when they are sleeping as well. If their whiskers are forward pointing this means that they are alert and curious, normally stalking their favorite mouse toy or canine friend. If your Ragdolls whiskers are flattened back this can mean that your cat is scared, anxious or feeling aggressive. It is important to be aware of your cats body language, especially when introducing them to new things!
Are my Ragdoll cats Whiskers too long?
Ragdoll cat whiskers, just like every other cat tend to be as wide as the cats body. Since whiskers act as a guage for them to fit into tight spaces, they typically grow as long as needed for this purpose. Some Ragdolls may have longer whiskers due to their fluffier build, but their is no "guideline" for the length of Ragdolls whiskers. It is not recommended to trim your Ragdoll cats whiskers, while they do grow back within 4-6 weeks, trimming their whiskers can temporarily disorient/blind your cat. This leaves them feeling vulnerable and unable to navigate properly, so it is never recommened to trim your Ragdolls whiskers. Their whiskers are exactly the length they need to be!
Why do Ragdoll Kitten whiskers look cut off?
Sometimes kittens whiskers can appear to be shorter or "cut off". This is super normal and common in Ragdoll kittens and can be the result of a few things. When kittens are around 8-12 weeks old the mama kitty tends to "trim" her kittens whiskers, this is a common instinct and is done to keep the kittens from wandering too far from their "nest". Another common reason that kittens whiskers are shorter is due to rough-housing and playing with siblings, which can cause whiskers to break off. This is normally temporary and whiskers will grow back to normal size in about 4-6 weeks.
What is "Whisker Fatigue"?
Because whiskers are so sensitive, constant stimulation can overwhelm a your cats brain. If a food bowl is too narrow or deep, their whiskers may constantly rub against the sides, causing a stressful condition known as "whisker fatigue". Using wide, shallow dishes or flat plates helps to keep your cat comfortable during mealtime.

Cat whiskers truly are the felines 6th sense, acting as a personal radar system for these sweethearts.
Fun Facts:
Whiskers can detect changes in air currents, allowing cats to sense when something is approaching them.
Like hair, whiskers can fall out naturally and grow back.
Some whiskers can turn grey or white as cats age.
Whiskers should never be trimmed, this is essentially "blinding" your cat until their whiskers grow back.
Thank you so much for reading! We hope that learning about Ragdoll whiskers was just as fasinating to you as it was to us!
