I love house plants so finding the perfect ones that benefit our home and are safe for our kitties was super important to me. During my research I found that there are plenty of non-toxic house plants that are safe for our ragdoll kitties.

It is very important to choose safe non-toxic plants for your home, especially for your kitties. Cats love to nibble, chew and sometimes even eat the leaves of the plants. A plant that is toxic can have side effects like vomiting, diarrhea and can be as severe as death in some cases (ex: Lillies). It is best to do research and error on the side of caution before bringing any house plant into your home.

We did some of the research for you... Here is a super simple list of the top 10 safe house plants for your Ragdoll.

FUN FACT

There has been a myth that a favorite holiday plant, the Poinsettia is toxic to cats/dogs making pet families avoid this plant for years! However, this is not the case. While Poinsettas are not toxic to pets they can cause mild stomach upsets if ingested. A study conducted by the ASPCA found that Poinsettias are not toxic to cats. So good news, you can have your adorable Poinsettias at Christmas time without the fear of causing harm to your kitties!

It is super important to remember while all of these plants are considered non-toxic they can cause stomach upsets if ingested in large amounts so it is always a good idea to keep houseplants out of reach of pets and young children.

HOW CAN I TELL IF MY RAGDOLL ATE A TOXIC PLANT?

If your Ragdoll ate a toxic plant there will be symptoms that are presented. These are similar to anything toxic that they consume/get into. A few symptoms include, gastrointestinal upsets which are diarrhea and vomiting. They may also develop excessive drooling and can paw at their face from discomfort. Some toxins in plants (or other toxic things) can affect the neurological system which can cause dizziness, lethargy and in some cases seizures.

WHAT DO I DO IF MY RAGDOLL EATS A TOXIC PLANT?

If you think your cat might have nibbled on a toxic plant, it's a good idea to reach out to your vet right away. Some plants can be really dangerous, and your cat could be in a life threatening situation if they consumed a toxic plant.

If you are anything like me then having the safest option for your kitties is always most important. There are plenty of adorable house plants that have not been listed above that are also safe for your kitty. Doing your own reasearch is always the most important thing before bringing in any houseplant to your home. It is also always smart to keep your plants up high where your kitties cannot reach them.

We hope this helped you decide on some non-toxic houseplants for your home!
